Following an internal Health & Safety audit, our customer identified a critical access issue involving maintenance personnel requiring access to rooftop plant equipment. The existing arrangement did not provide adequate protection for external engineers accessing roof-mounted units, creating a potential safety risk.
The customer approached us to design, supply, and install a compliant roof access solution that would provide safe entry and exit onto the roof while meeting current safety requirements and minimising disruption to site operations.
Challenge:
The primary challenge was ensuring safe roof access for engineers carrying out routine maintenance on rooftop equipment. The solution needed to provide a secure transition point between the access route and the roof working area.
In addition, the installation presented a technical challenge. The new access system had to be fixed securely to an existing structure while maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the safety barrier. The solution also needed to withstand long-term exposure to the elements, requiring consideration of materials and durability.
Actions:
Tadweld carried out a site survey to assess the existing access arrangements and identify the most suitable solution.
To address the safety concerns, we designed, supplied, and installed a self-closing safety gate, creating a controlled and secure access point onto the roof. The gate automatically closes after use, helping to prevent accidental exposure to fall hazards and ensuring the access point remains protected at all times.
To overcome the installation challenge, the gate was securely integrated into the existing structure and connected to a newly installed galvanised steel handrail system. Galvanised steel was selected for its excellent weather resistance, durability, and suitability for long-term external applications.
Results:
The completed installation provided the customer with a safe, compliant, and durable roof access solution.
Key outcomes included:
Safe and controlled access for external engineers working on rooftop equipment.
- Improved compliance with Health & Safety requirements identified during the internal audit.
- A robust self-closing gate system that reduces the risk of accidental exposure to roof-edge hazards.
- A durable galvanised steel handrail installation designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and minimise future maintenance requirements.
- Increased confidence for the customer that roof access activities can be carried out safely and efficiently.
The project successfully resolved the customer's safety concerns, delivering a practical and long-lasting solution that supports ongoing maintenance operations while prioritising worker safety.
